The mountains near Los Angeles and San Diego recorded the most rain as Tropical Storm Hilary swept into Southern California over the weekend.In the National Weather Service’s 48-hour totals ending at 7 a.m. Monday, many stations in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains had readings of 5 to 6 inches.Mount San Jacinto, above Palm Springs, had a reading of 11.6, and Upper Mission Creek, 10 miles southeast of Big Bear, had 13.54. These are raw data, not yet subjected to quality control.Stovepipe Wells, in Death Valley, and Red Rock Canyon, near Las Vegas, both recorded about 3 inches in those 48 hours. Downtown Las Vegas reported 0.63 inches.The storm’s effects petered out in the southern Sierra Nevada. California police officer charged after woman suffers brain injury during arrest

A Hemet police officer was arrested on Friday, Aug. 18, after being charged with assaulting a woman during an arrest in July, causing her to suffer a brain injury, authorities said.Jacob Alan Hobson, 29, was arrested at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and charged with two counts of assault likely to cause great bodily injury and one count of assault under color of authority. The District Attorney’s Office also filed two enhancements of causing a person to become comatose or permanently paralyzed that could each add five years to a sentence if Hobson is convicted.One of the assault charges carries a possible sentence of two or three years; the second assault charge and the charge of assault under color of authority could result in sentences of 16 months to three years, according to the criminal complaint.Hobson was placed on paid leave, the Hemet Police Department said. Man fatally shot Sunday evening in East Oakland, 3rd killing in a day

OAKLAND — A 31-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday evening in East Oakland, the city’s third homicide of the day, authorities said.His name was not immediately released. None of the killings are believed to be related, police said.The 31-year-old man was shot about 5:42 p.m. Sunday outside in the 5800 block of Bancroft Avenue after getting into an argument with another man, authorities said. He died at the scene.The suspect fled before police could respond. Investigators did not specify what they believed the argument was about.The killing is the 71st homicide investigated by Oakland police this year and was the third within a 15-hour period Sunday. Residential building collapses after 3-alarm fire in College Park

Residents are searching for somewhere to sleep tonight after a three-alarm fire broke out at a three-story building in College Park, Maryland, on Monday morning.Prince George’s County Fire and EMS told WTOP that the extent of the flames caused the roof to collapse.Two adult residents have hospitalized with minor injuries, according to fire department officials. No firefighters have been hurt.Crews were dispatched to the 10100 block of Baltimore Avenue shortly after 8 a.m., according to the Prince George’s County fire department.
