Calgary home sales set new July record as they climbed 18% from last year: board

CALGARY — The Calgary Real Estate Board says rising interest rates had little impact on last month’s home sales, which reached a record level for July.The Albertan board says sales for the month totalled 2,647, up 18 per cent from the prior July.It attributes the increase to significant gains in the relatively affordable apartment condominium sector. However, the board says despite recent gains, year-to-date sales have declined by 19 per cent compared with last year and inventory levels remain near the July record low set in 2006.July’s new listings totalled 3,247, up two per cent from a year earlier.The average price of a home was up almost 10 per cent from last year to $539,461, while the benchmark price ticked up nearly six per cent to $567,700.“Continued migration to the province, along with our relative affordability, has supported the stronger demand for housing despite higher lending rates,” said Ann-Marie Lurie, the board’s chief economist, in a news releas...

Police charge Australian man with 1,600 child abuse offenses in ‘one of the most horrific cases’

SYDNEY, Australia — Australian police on Tuesday charged a former childcare worker with abusing 91 girls in what officials are calling one of the worst such cases in recent history.The 45-year-old man faces life in prison.“This is one of the most horrific child abuse cases that I’ve seen in nearly 40 years of policing,” New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald said.Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough said that the man was charged with 1,623 child abuse offenses that allegedly took place in Brisbane, Sydney and overseas over a 15-year period. JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel is holding over 1,200 detainees — nearly all of them Palestinians — without charge or trial, the highest number in over three decades, an Israeli human rights group said Tuesday. The detainees, 99% of whom are Palestinians, are held under Israel’s policy of “administrative detention,” without trial and under allegations that Israeli authorities keep secret. The detentions can range from a few months to years — and authorities often extend them for unknown reasons, according to Jessica Montell, the executive director of Hamoked, the rights group that published the figures. KILDEER, Ill. — A woman is charged with an armed robbery at a Bank of America in Kildeer.Tina Lambert faces charges of armed robbery, burglary and felony theft.According to police, officers responded to a call of an "armed robbery in progress" around 10 a.m. Monday to the Bank of America on Rand Road.It was reported that Lambert, who was wearing a white face covering, told a bank employee that she had a gun, and to put the money in a duffle bag.
